Javits Fellowship Program

Who Can Apply: US Citizens, Permanent Residents – Graduating Seniors, Recent Grads, Graduate Students (who have not yet completed one full year of graduate study – Must be applying to graduate programs offering the highest degree offered in that field of study – Must demonstrate financial need through a FAFSA form

IMPORTANT: A student who demonstrates no financial need is NOT eligible for a Javits fellowship.

IMPORTANT: Applicants must be seeking a doctoral degree (or master's degree, if the master's degree is the terminal or highest degree awarded in an approved field).

IMPORTANT: Applicants must be eligible to be accepted to or currently attending a graduate program leading to a doctorate or a terminal master's degree in an eligible field of study at an institution of higher education accredited in the United States. Applicants attending or planning to attend a foreign institution are ineligible.

Description: This program provides fellowships to students of superior academic ability—selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise—to undertake study at the doctoral (or Master of Fine Arts) level in selected fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences.

ARTS: Creative Writing; Music Performance, Theory, Composition, and Literature; Studio Arts (including Photography); Television, Film, and Cinematography; Theater Arts, Playwriting, Screenwriting, Acting, and Dance

HUMANITIES: Archaeology; Area Studies; Classics; Comparative Literature; English Language and Literature; Folklore, Folklife; Foreign Languages and Literature; Less Commonly Taught Languages [Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Indic family (Hindi, Urdu, Sinhala, Bengali, Nepali, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Oriya, Assamese, etc.), Iranian family (Dari, Farsi, Tajiki, Kurdish, Pashto, Balochi, etc.), and Turkic family (Turkish, Azerbaijani/Azeri, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Turkmen, Uzbek, Uyghur, etc.)]; American History; Non-American History; Linguistics; Philosophy; Religion,* Speech, Rhetoric, and Debate, Art History

* Fellowships cannot be used for students studying for a religious vocation, or for study for a Masters degree or Ph.D. in clinical psychology or social work.

Award Amount: The fellowship consists of an institutional payment (accepted by the institution of higher education in lieu of all tuition and fees for the fellow) and a stipend (based on the fellow's financial need as determined by the measurements of the Federal Student Assistance Processing System). For fiscal year 2010 the estimated institutional payment will be $13,755 and the maximum stipend will be $30,000.

Duration: Subject to the availability of funds, a fellow receives the Javits fellowship annually for up to the lesser of 48 months or the completion of their degree.
